A picturesque village at the foot of a very steep hill, Captain James Cook worked here as a grocer's apprentice before moving to Whitby to join his first ship. During the 18th century 400 fishing cobles sailed from this port returning laden with mackerel and cod, the fisherman's wives were famous for their "Staithes Bonnet" You can tie up temporarily against the pier, tide and weather permitting, and explore the historic village.
