LOSE THE LICENCE
Having scrapped the VHF radio licence for small boats, it seems the Federal Communications Commission in America has decided to eliminate licensing of aircraft radios and ground receivers because, ‘it served no safety or operational purposes’. To my mind this actually sounds like plain common sense, our licence fee does no more than to pay people to check up that we have a licence. All the money is taken up to enforce this antiquated piece of officialdom which is out dated and serves no purpose whatsoever with no profit for anyone at the end of it, in fact it’s actually run at a loss. When you multiply the licence fee by over 50,000 or so pleasure licensees, we’re talking over £900,000 per annum. On this basis I don’t think we’re getting value for money. Will our own Radio Communications Agency follow suit? Unfortunately I very much doubt it, but we live in hope that someone with a bit of backbone will realise the futility of, ‘The Radio Licence.’
