Holy Island, 67nm North

A fascinating island steeped in history, St. Aiden founded the monastery in the 7th century followed by St. Cuthbert. In the 11th century a Benedictine priory was built and its remains are now a museum. A small 16th century castle stands proud on a rocky point, which you will see as you approach Holy Island. There are good anchorage's or visitors moorings off the Heugh. Alternately you can dry out safely on the Ouse. A very pretty place with several good places to eat and drink, and once the causeway is flooded and the day-trippers have left then you are part of this historic island.
